November 2014 Meeting

Craobh Eo Chapter Building

The November meeting of the 2014/2015 year was held on Thurs. 13th November in the Craobh Eo Centre in Aghamore.

Pat O'Malley was the demonstrator for the evening and chose to make a hand mirror out of cherry. This involved turning a face into which the mirror would fit and a handle.

His first task was to mount a disk on the chuck using a spigot previously attached and turn a recess in the front to hold the face for finishing later. Next he turned a recess to hold the mirror itself which had to be a good fit but not too tight as the mirror had to pop in and out and also allow for a bit of wood movement. The face was then shaped on the front and sides and sanded. Finally the face was remounted in the chuck for finishing the back.

At this stage the face would normally be mounted in a drill press and drilled on edge to receive the handle. In this case due this had been done previously on the rough blank using a best guess approach.

Finally a blank was mounted for the handle, turned to a cylinder and marked out. A spigot of 12mm to fit into the face was made at one end before turning the designs and smoothing it off.

This demonstrated different techniques and many variations of the design could be undertaken.

A discussion on the website then took place and members undertook to come back next month with ideas to be implemented.

The Christmas dinner this year will be held in the McWilliam Park hotel in Claremorris on Saturday the 22nd November. This is in a week's time. Last year was a great success and all are invited including past members so we look forward to meeting everyone for a great evening. Tickets are €25 each which includes a 4 course meal. Please support if you can.

November Competition

The November competition was a U.F.O. - 3 legs. There was a good and varied turnout and great credit to all who submitted their piece. It was wonderful to see so many great ideas and the work and detail each person put into their individual piece.
